In fact, this very thing recently happened to me on several fronts! Even though it often occurs,
I am still in awe when it does. It is a beautiful thing when your loved one voluntarily does what
you've been striving to make happen.
It is so contrary to our reason. Everything in us wants to directly confront the problem head
on. Yet by focusing on our own reactions, instead of the person involved or the circumstances, we
attain our desired goal.
In retrospect it always makes sense, but the art is to believe it in the midst of the situation!
Here is a favorite story that illustrates this principle of how to deal with stress.
The North Wind and The Sun

The North Wind boasted of great strength. The Sun argued that
there was great power in gentleness.
"We shall have a contest," said the Sun.
Far below, a man traveled a winding road. He was wearing a
warm winter coat.
"As a test of strength," said the Sun, "Let us see which of us can take
the coat off of that man."
"It will be quite simple for me to force him to remove his coat,"
bragged the Wind.
The Wind blew so hard, the birds clung to the trees. The world was
filled with dust and leaves. But the harder the wind blew down the
road, the tighter the shivering man clung to his coat.
Then, the Sun came out from behind a cloud. Sun warmed the air
and the frosty ground. The man on the road unbuttoned his coat.
The sun grew slowly brighter and brighter.
Soon the man felt so hot, he took off his coat and sat down in a
shady spot.
"How did you do that?" said the Wind.
"It was easy," said the Sun, "I lit the day. Through gentleness I got my
way."
For many people, this is difficult because it often goes against
reason, at least in the beginning. However, the results can be so
dramatic that soon it all makes sense, and you become better at knowing how to deal with
stress.
One day you realize that you no longer are so easily provoked.
Your body no longer reacts in the old way. What a relief! It is a relief
for yourself as well as those around you.
The best part is that it is not as though you have only imitated some
script. You have become the script. It is genuine! To your
amazement, your child no longer is defiant or lazy.
The higher power, in its infinite wisdom, has manipulated everything
simultaneously for everyone concerned so that it all works together
for the good of everyone concerned.
Time and again I have seen this process work. By submitting to the
circumstances and accepting things as they are, and working on
my own reaction, my ability to manage grows, and the change I so
strongly desired happens!
A great deal of humility and trust is required for this to take place.
You will find that your mouth just wants to run off, explaining,
defending, fault-finding and so on. But your strength will be gained
in your silence.

When you're not talking, it is much easier to listen to
